Gilang Lipuro’s Hermitage

Gilang Lipuro’s Hermitage, or known locally as Petilasan Gilang Lipuro or Petilasan Selo Gilang. Is a historical and spiritual site located in Kauman Gilangharjo Village, Pandak District, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This hermitage holds significant historical value, particularly in the context of the establishment of the Mataram.

The site is believed to be where Danang Sutawijaya, who later became Panembahan Senopati. The founder and first king of the Mataram Sultanate, meditated and prayed. It is said that Panembahan Senopati received divine revelations (wahyu) at this spot. Which guided him in establishing the Mataram Islamic Kingdom.

Gilang Lipuro’s Hermitage serves as a historical testament to the roots of the Mataram Sultanate. A powerful Javanese kingdom that shaped much of the region’s history. This location is one of many sites in Bantul that are proof of the beginning of the Mataram Islamic Kingdom.

The main feature of the hermitage is a rectangular stone, known as Selo Gilang. Where Panembahan Senopati is believed to have performed his spiritual practices. The stone itself is protected by a small building, where is located has a rectangular plan with a small terrace at the front. Watu gilang is located was of land surrounded by walls on all sides.
