The unique manufacturing process, namely carving directly into a rock cliff, makes it one of the rare examples of temple architecture in Indonesia.
The name “Gunung Kawi” itself comes from the words “Gunung” which means mountain and “Kawi” which means sculpture. So, literally, Gunung Kawi Temple means a temple carved on a mountain. Even though it is not located at the top of a mountain, the manufacturing process which involves carving into a vertical rock cliff gives the impression of being carved into a mountain.
