Built during the reign of King Udayana, one of Bali’s most influential kings, Gunung Kawi Temple is thought to date from the 10th century. This temple is not just a place of worship, but also functions as the final resting place for the king and his family. The unique manufacturing process, namely carving directly into a rock cliff, makes it one of the rare examples of temple architecture in Indonesia.

The name “Gunung Kawi” itself comes from the words “Gunung” which means mountain and “Kawi” which means sculpture. So, literally, Gunung Kawi Temple means a temple carved on a mountain. Even though it is not located at the top of a mountain, the manufacturing process which involves carving into a vertical rock cliff gives the impression of being carved into a mountain.

Architectural Uniqueness

One of the unique things about Gunung Kawi Temple is hidden location between river cliffs. To reach the temple, visitors have to go down quite steep stairs. Along the journey, visitors will be treated to beautiful natural views and the sound of gurgling river water.

This temple consists of several groups of temples carved into rock cliffs. Each temple has a different shape and size. Some temples are rectangular, some are circular. Inside the temple, there are niches which are believed to be places where statues of gods are placed.
