Indonesian Independence Day

In this travel story I give the title Indonesian independence day, which is about a couple of tourists from Spain who happened to come to Yogyakarta at the moment of Indonesian Independence Day celebration in my village. I live in Daleman Gilangharjo Pandak Bantul Yogyakarta. Before I tell you more about our adventure in the village, i will give a little information about Indonesian Independence celebration.

Indonesian Independence Day is a national holiday in Indonesia commemorating the country’s declaration of independence on August 17, 1945. The day is celebrated with parades, ceremonies, and cultural events throughout the country. The Indonesian people celebrate their independence day with a variety of activities, including:

Food, traditional Indonesian food is served at celebrations throughout the country. Usually, mothers and young women in my village compete to make unique foods in large quantities. After the Indonesian independence celebration is over, usually the food will be eaten together.

Indonesian Independence Celebration

At that time I was a guide for a 3-day city tour in Yogyakarta and surroundings, with a couple tourists from Spain. The first day we visited Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple. The second day we went to Jomblang Cave and Pindul Cave which are located in Gunung Kidul Regency. Third day we will visit the Yogyakarta Palace, Taman Sari, Bird Market and Merapi Jeep.

The first day we met, they looked very enthusiastic to visit the Borobudur temple and the Prambanan temple. Along the way we chatted about many things around us. At that time it was August before the Covid-19 pandemic entered Indonesia. In August all Indonesian people celebrate independence with various activities. Coincidentally in my village there was a children’s competition and the time of the competition coincided with the third day or the last day of my guests in Yogyakarta. They told me to cancel the tour in Merapi and replace it with visiting my village to see the celebration of Indonesian independence and a bicycle tour in my village.

The day arrived, we did a bike tour first in the village. And after that joined the group of young teenager in my village for the 17th August competition. They participated in various competitions, such as marble running, cracker eating competition, needle insertion competition in bottles and many more. The point is they were very satisfied with the tour with me, they said that they were very lucky to meet me. A tour guide who doesn’t just think about making money but instead provides more service to make tourists happy. Thank you very much everyone, hopefully we can meet again another time. God bless you
