
Mendut Temple, one of Indonesia’s archaeological wonders, is located in Mendut Village, Mungkid District, Magelang Regency, Central Java. This magnificent Buddhist temple is known as part of the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world along with Borobudur Temple and Pawon Temple. These three temples are interrelated and have an important role in the history of the development of Buddhism in Indonesia.
Mendut Temple is thought to have been built in the 9th century. during the reign of King Indra from the Syailendra Dynasty. Based on the inscriptions found. this temple was originally called Srimad Wenuwana. Mendut Temple underwent several restorations, especially after it was rediscovered in the 19th century.
Architecture and Ornament
Mendut Temple has a distinctive architecture with a sturdy, stepped shape. The inside of the temple is decorated with three main statues, namely:
Dhyani Buddha Wairocana Statue: As the center of attention, this statue depicts Buddha in his perfect form.

Awalokitesvara Bodhisattva Statue: Is a symbol of compassion and mercy.
Wajrapani Bodhisattva Statue: Symbolizes strength and wisdom.
Apart from statues, the temple walls are also decorated with beautiful reliefs depicting various stories in Buddhism. These reliefs are very detailed and show the high level of skill of the sculptors of that time.
