Selogriyo Temple, a masterpiece of ancient Hindu-Buddhist civilization, is hidden among the natural beauty of the slopes of Mount Sumbing, Magelang, Central Java. This temple, which does not have a pewara or accompanying temple, stands on the edge of rice fields. This temple is not just a pile of ancient stones, but a window that reveals the story of past glories.
Estimated to have been built in the 9th century AD, Selogriyo Temple is a relic of the Ancient Mataram Kingdom. The name “Selogriyo” itself comes from the Old Javanese words, “selo” which means stone and “griyo” which means house. So, Selogriyo Temple can literally be interpreted as “stone house”.

This temple was first discovered in the 19th century by a Dutchman named Van Erp. After going through a long excavation process, the beauty and uniqueness of Selogriyo Temple began to be revealed.
Architectural Uniqueness
The architecture of this temple has its own characteristics. Its unique shape with very detailed reliefs depicts the daily life of people at that time. These reliefs also depict puppet stories and Hindu mythology.
Lingga and yoni One of the unique things about Selogriyo Temple is the presence of a Lingga and yoni which depict fertility and prosperity.
Reliefs of Gods : Various reliefs of Hindu gods and goddesses such as Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma decorate the walls of the temple.
Stupa: This temple also has a stupa, a dome-shaped structure that is usually used to store the relics or ashes of saints.

Selogriyo Temple is located in Candisari Village, Windusari District, Magelang Regency. To reach the temple location, visitors must pass a winding and uphill road. However, the tiredness of traveling will be paid off with beautiful natural views and a calm atmosphere around the temple.
